۷•۱۸. Numeral Pronouns

Numeral pronouns are determinative phrases which substitute cardinal numerals:

  • The following numeral pronouns substitute cardinal numerals exceeding 1:
    1. The numeral pronoun /ʧænd/ چند:

      /ʧænd ketɒb/ چند کتاب (see 6•۱•۱•b.), /ʧænd bær-ɒ-bær/ چند برابر (see 6•۳•a.), /hær ʧænd tɒ/ هر چند تا (see 7•۸•a.), /ʧænd-lɒ/ چندلا (see 10•c•b.), /ʧændomin/ چندمین (see 6•۴.)

      شبانِ وادیِ ایمن گهی رسد به مراد

      که چند سال به جان خدمتِ شعیب کند

    2. The numeral pronouns /ænd/ اند, /idænd/ ایدند and /inænd/ اینند in archaic idioms:

      اند جای بیان کردیم که لعل را معنی ترجّی باشد.

      به گامِ فکر بپیموده‌ام جنابِ تو را

      به اند گام زِ پهنایِ آسمان بیش‌ست

  • The following numeral pronouns substitute higher cardinal numerals:
    1. /ʧænd-in/ چندین (= [NP[Dnumeral pronoun /ʧænd/ چند] [NPdemonstrative pronoun /in/ این]]) which originally means “several like this”, is used in Persian as a numeral pronoun:

      /ʧænd-in næfær/ چندین نفر (see 6•۱•۱•b.), /ʧænd-in hezɒr/ چندین هزار (see 6•۱•۱•b.), /ʧænd-in bær-ɒ-bær/ چندین برابر (see 6•۳•a.)

      ما را چندین ولایت در پیش‌ست، آن را به فرمانِ امیرالمومنین می‌باید گرفت.

    2. The numeral pronoun /ʧænd-in o ʧænd/ چندین و چند (by means of a coordination of the numeral pronouns /ʧænd-in/ چندین and /ʧænd/ چند with a conjunction /o/):

      /ʧænd-in o ʧænd sɒl/ چندین و چند سال (see 6•۱•۱•b.)

    3. In archaic idioms, the numeral pronoun /ʧænd-ɒn/ چندان (= [NP[Dnumeral pronoun /ʧænd/ چند] [NPdemonstrative pronoun /ɒn/ آن]]) with the original meaning “several like that”:

      به چندان فروغ و به چندان چراغ

      بیاراسته چون به نوروز باغ

    4. The numeral pronoun /ʧænd-i/ چندی (generated by attaching the enclitical article /-i/ to the numeral pronoun /ʧænd/ چند, see 3•۲•b•b•a. Indefinite Numeral Phrases) in archaic idioms:

      فریبرز کاووس را تاجِ زر

      فرستاد و دینار و چندی گهر

      Ferdowsi (10th and 11th Century AD)

  • The following numeral pronouns substitute smaller digits in cardinal numerals:
    1. The numeral pronoun /ænd/ اند, in modern idioms usually with the enclitical article /-i/ (/ænd-i/ اندی, see 3•۲•b•b•a. Indefinite Numeral Phrases):

      سد و اندی /sæd o ænd-i/

      بسیار بکشت، تا بیست و اند هزار مسلمان بر دستِ او شهید گشت.

    2. The numeral pronoun /xordæ-i/ خرده‌ای (generated by attaching the enclitical article /-i/ to the noun /xordæ/ خرده, see 3•۲•b•b•a. Indefinite Numeral Phrases):

      هشتاد و خرده‌ای /hæʃtɒd o xordæ-i/

  • The numeral pronoun /xordæ-i/ خرده‌ای can also substitute the fraction numeral component in mixed numerals:

    هفت و خرده‌ای /hæft o xordæ-i/
