۶•۵. Distributive Numerals

A distributive numeral is an adjectival numeral indicating the number of items within a set.

Persian distributive numerals are generated using the following patterns:

  • By attaching the suffix /-gɒn/ or /-gɒnæ/ to cardinal numerals (see 20•d.):

کوه‌کوبان را یکان اندر کشیده زیرِ داغ

بادپایان را دوگان اندر کمند افکنـده خوار

Farrukhi Sistani (10th and 11th Century AD)

زِ هر سو گوان سر بر افراختند

    یکان و دوگانـه همی تاختند

Ferdowsi (10th and 11th Century AD)

هر شبی پنجگان و ششگان همی کشتی

From the book “ترجمه‌یِ تفسیرِ تبری(۱۰th Century AD)

این جا همی یکان و دوگان قرمطی کشد

زینان به ری هزار بیاید به یک زمان

Farrukhi Sistani (10th and 11th Century AD)

پس یوسف ایشان را می‌خرید یگـان و دوگان.

From the book “ترجمه‌یِ تفسیرِ تبری(۱۰th Century AD)

سوگند چون خوری به طلاقِ سه‌گانه خور!

تا من شوم حلال‌گرِ آن مطلّقه

    Suzani Samarqandi (12th Century AD)

این مرد در همه‌یِ انواعِ هنر یگانه‌یِ روزگار بود.

Abolfazl Beyhaqi (10th and 11th Century AD)

از اینان یکی سر برنمی‌دارد که دوگانـه‌ای بگزارد.

Saadi (12th and 13th Century AD)

از آن سدگانه یکی زنگی بجسته بود.

Nezami Gandjavi (12th and 13th Century AD)

The affixal formation /ʤodɒgɒnæ/ جداگانه (with the adjective /ʤodɒ/ جدا as stem) is also used in Persian as a distributive numeral:

    رنگِ هر گنبدی جداگانه

    خوش‌تر از رنگِ سد صنم‌خانه

Nezami Gandjavi (12th and 13th Century AD)

  • By copulative composition of the counting numerals with themselves: /jek-jek/ یک‌یک, /jek-i-jek-i/ یکی‌یکی, /do tɒ-do tɒ/ دو تا-دو تا

    این زمان پنج‌پنج /pænʤ-pænʤ/ می‌گیرد

    چون شده عابد و مسلمانا

    Obeid Zakani (14th Century AD)

شکرها را سه کیلو-سه کیلو بسته‌بندی کرد.

/tæk-tæk/ تک‌تک is also counted among these distributive numerals:

    تک‌تکِ شما را می‌شناسم.

  • By attaching the suffix /-gɒn/ to cardinal numerals (see 20•d.) and the subsequent copulative composition of the created affixal formations with themselves:

ای کاشکی که هر مو گردد زبان مرا

تا مدحِ تو طلب کنمی از یکان‌یکان /jekɒn-jekɒn/

Farrukhi Sistani (10th and 11th Century AD)

    زِ قلعه‌هایِ دگر گر یکان‌یکان /jekɒn-jekɒn/ گویم

شود دراز و نیاید به عمرِ نوح به سر

Onsuri (10th and 11th Century AD)

و سی هزار سوار با او جمـع شدند، پانسدگان‌پانسدگان /pɒnsædgɒn-pɒnsædgɒn/ به ناحیت‌ها همی فرستاد.

From the book “Tarikh Sistan” (۱۱th Century AD)

گردون هزارگان ستد از من به جور و قهر

هرچ آن که‌از اوی یافته بودم یکان‌یکان /jekɒn-jekɒn/

Masud Saad Salman (11th and 12th Century AD)

    و مردمانِ لشکر و مهتران یکان‌یکان /jekɒn-jekɒn/ و دوگان به زینهار می‌آمدند.

From the book “ترجمه‌یِ تفسیرِ تبری(۱۰th Century AD)

  • If the distributive numeral is generated with the measure word numerals having the cardinal numeral /jek/, this cardinal numeral can be deleted: /næfær-næfær/ نفرنفر, /sæbæd-sæbæd/ سبدسبد

ده جلد کتابِ شما را جلدجلد خواندم، ولی متوجّه نشدم که شما چه برداشتی از واژه‌یِ مذهب دارید.

  • One can also generate distributive numerals from numeral phrases having the cardinal numeral /jek/ by deletion of this cardinal numeral:

    حرف‌حرفِ /hærf-hærf/ گفته‌های‌ش را از بر دارم.

    بنـد‌بنـدِ /bænd-bænd/ وجودِ من دیدارِ او را می‌طلبد.

  • By using the second counting numeral as a directive adverbial in the form of a adpositional phrase with the preposition /bæ/, and building a phrase with the first counting numeral (see 15•۴•c.): /gɒm bæ gɒm/ گام به گام

دو دقیقه به دو دقیقه /do dæɣiɣe bæ do dæɣiɣe/ فشارِ خونِ او را انـدازه می‌گیرند.

کیلومتر به کیلومتر /kilumetr bæ kilumetr/ کنارِ جاده مسافت‌نما گذاشته بودند.
